Before buying an air-treatment appliance

Start with the room and the job you want an appliance to do. Then compare the exact model, the space it needs and the costs that continue after delivery. This checklist is free to use without registering or buying anything.
Write down what you need
Make a short list before browsing. Are you replacing an existing appliance, comparing a portable unit or planning a larger installation? Record the room dimensions and the limits of your available space. Use those notes when reading the manufacturer's model-specific sizing guidance, rather than choosing from a product photo.
Compare appliances intended for the same task. A fan, humidifier, dehumidifier and air purifier are different product categories. A feature list does not establish whether a model suits your room or solves the concern that prompted you to shop.
Check fit and installation requirements
Measure the proposed location, including the clearance, access and ventilation required in the instructions. Check the voltage, outlet and installation requirements. For equipment that needs mounting, drainage or professional installation, establish what work is required and obtain an installation estimate before committing to the equipment.
Read the exact model number and the list of included accessories. Check whether a hose, adapter, mounting kit, filter or other required part is included or sold separately. Ask the seller to clarify a missing specification rather than assuming that a similar model uses the same parts.
Include the ongoing costs
Find the replacement filter or other consumable part number, its current price and the manufacturer's maintenance instructions. Check whether replacement supplies are available for the model you are considering. A low initial price can be less useful if the parts you need are hard to find.
Compare the manufacturer's stated power use and noise specifications under the stated operating conditions. Keep those conditions alongside your notes so you do not compare figures measured in different ways. Do not treat a quoted specification as a promise about your own electricity bill or the sound in your room.
Compare the complete order
List the appliance price, tax, shipping, required accessories and any installation charge. Check delivery arrangements for heavy or bulky items, including where the carrier leaves the shipment. Read the seller's current return window, item-condition requirements, return-shipping charges and any restocking fee before ordering.
Distinguish a new item from an open-box or used listing. Check the warranty and return terms for the exact condition offered. Save the product listing, model number, order confirmation and policies you relied on.
Keep product claims separate from shopping decisions
This guide helps organize a purchase comparison. We have not purchased or tested the linked equipment, and this is not a recommendation for a health condition or a promise about air quality, safety, energy savings or product performance. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and ask a qualified professional about installation questions that a product listing does not answer.
