What to check before buying a desk chair

A chair has to fit you, your desk and the space around it. Start with measurements and the adjustments you actually need, then compare the full delivered cost. This checklist is free to use without registering or buying anything.
Measure your current setup
Write down your desk height, the clearance beneath it and the floor space available for the chair. Include the room you need to pull it out and move around. Check whether the armrests can pass beneath the desk at the height you plan to use. Compare the chair's listed overall dimensions with the space, not just the width of its seat.
If you have a chair that fits reasonably well, measure its seat height and depth as a starting point. Note what you would change. A photo of a chair beside a desk does not establish that it will fit your own setup.
Compare the adjustment ranges
Read the listed seat-height range, seat depth, backrest dimensions and armrest adjustments. Check which features are adjustable and which are fixed. If the listing gives a recommended user-height range or weight limit, compare it with your requirements and ask the seller about anything unclear.
Decide which adjustments matter before comparing extras. A footrest, head cushion or reclining feature adds little value if the chair does not work at your desk. Follow the manufacturer's setup and use instructions. This guide does not assess whether a chair is suitable for a medical condition.
Check materials, assembly and floor compatibility
Compare the stated upholstery materials and care instructions with how you will use the chair. Find out what arrives assembled, what tools are needed and whether the package can be handled safely when it is delivered. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the supplied wheels and your floor surface, including whether any additional floor protection is recommended.
Keep the product description and assembly instructions. If a part is missing or damaged, contact the seller using its stated process before trying to modify the chair.
Read the return and warranty details before ordering
| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Fit | Seat and overall dimensions, adjustment ranges and desk clearance |
| Delivery | Stock status, shipping to your address, package size and delivery estimate |
| Complete cost | Price, tax, shipping and any optional accessories or assembly |
| Returns | Return window, eligibility after assembly, packaging requirements and return shipping |
| Warranty | Covered parts, exclusions, claim process and any costs you would pay |
Check the return policy for the exact item and location. Do not assume you can return an assembled chair for free. Save the receipt and packaging until you have checked the order and decided whether to keep it.
