Before buying a console game or choosing a rental plan

Start with the games you want to play and the console you already own. Compare buying a title with paying for a rental plan, then check the complete cost and the conditions for stopping. This checklist is free to use without registering or buying anything.

Check the exact game and console

Write down the console model, game title and edition. Check the seller's current compatibility information, including whether your console can use a physical disc or cartridge. A digital-only console needs a compatible digital purchase. An expansion, upgrade or season pass may require a separate base game.

Compare what is included in each edition. Artwork, bonus items and additional content only add value if you want them. For a used physical copy, check the stated condition and whether any included download codes can still be used. Do not assume a photograph establishes what will arrive.

Compare ownership with an ongoing plan

For a purchase, total the game price, shipping, tax and any required extras. For a rental plan, check the recurring price, billing date, number of games you can hold and the process for requesting or returning them. Compare the amount you expect to spend over the same period.

Think about how long you usually play one title. A subscription may keep billing during a month when you do not use it. Check the current terms for cancellation, returns and any charge for an unreturned or damaged item. If an introductory offer appears, read the eligibility requirements and the price after it ends before signing up.

Check availability before planning around a game

Confirm the edition, platform and current purchase or rental availability on the seller's page. A title in a catalog is not a promise that it will ship when you want it. Read the delivery estimate and any queue or reservation rules before making plans around a release date.

If you are choosing a game for someone else, check its rating, content information and platform with them first. Keep the receipt and review the current return terms for opened products, digital purchases and rental plans.

Keep the decision within your budget

Compare the full cost with the amount you set aside for games. Include a separate online service or extra content only if the game you chose requires it. Save the product or plan information you relied on and check the renewal and cancellation details before paying.
