Before adding a documentary streaming subscription

Start with what you want to watch, the devices you use and the amount you are willing to spend. A subscription is easier to judge when you compare the full payment with a realistic viewing list. This checklist is free to use without registering or subscribing.
Make a short watch list first
Write down a few documentaries, series or subjects you would choose this month. Search the service's current catalog for the exact titles and check availability in your location. A large library is less useful if the programs you want are missing, unavailable locally or already included in a service you pay for.
Check the episode list and viewing details for each title. A trailer, promotional clip or similarly named program does not establish that the complete documentary is included. If a specific title is the reason you are joining, confirm that it is available before paying.
Separate the monthly equivalent from the payment
Read the billing period next to the advertised price. An annual plan can show a monthly equivalent while charging the full year at once. Compare the amount due today, the renewal amount, the renewal date and any tax with your budget. Check whether a promotional price changes after the first term.
For a hypothetical example, a plan advertised as $5 a month but billed annually requires a $60 payment before tax. A separate $8 monthly plan costs more per month, but two months would cost $16 before tax. The annual option is only useful if the longer commitment fits how you expect to use it. These figures are examples, not a current offer from a streaming service.
Check the device you will actually watch on
Find the current supported-device list and confirm your television, streaming device, phone or browser. Check whether the model and operating-system version matter. Do not assume that an app on one television will also work on another.
Compare the plan's stated rules for simultaneous screens, downloads and video quality. Check which features belong to the specific plan you are considering. For a bundle, list the additional services you would use and check how their accounts are activated. Extra services add little value if they duplicate subscriptions you already have.
Read the renewal and cancellation steps
Before joining, find out how to cancel and when cancellation takes effect. Check whether billing is handled by the service, an app store or another provider. Keep the receipt and use the instructions for the provider that actually bills you.
If a trial is offered, record its end date, the amount charged afterward and the cancellation deadline. A trial mentioned in an older review does not establish that one is available with your chosen plan. Set a reminder before the next payment and keep any cancellation confirmation.
Give the subscription a clear place in your budget
Add this payment to the streaming subscriptions you already pay for. Decide which service you would pause or cancel if the total exceeds your limit. Revisit your watch list before renewal rather than keeping a service simply because you might use it later.
