Before buying a gadget for your home

Start with the job you want a device to do and the space where you will use it. Then compare its requirements, ongoing costs and return terms. This checklist is free to read without registering or purchasing anything.
Write down the job before comparing features
Describe what you want to make easier in one sentence. That could be charging devices in one place, keeping track of room conditions or finding an item that is easier to use. Decide which features are necessary and which are extras before looking at bundles or promotional offers.
Check the exact model number and what is included in the box. A product photograph can show accessories that are sold separately. Keep a short list of the items you would need to buy before the device can be used.
Check fit, power and compatibility
Measure the location, including room for doors, moving parts, cords and ventilation specified in the instructions. Compare actual dimensions rather than relying on a photograph. Check the power requirements and whether the required adapter, charger or batteries are included.
For a connected device, check the stated phone, operating-system and network requirements. Find out whether basic use needs an app, an account, a paid subscription or an internet connection. Do not assume a device will work with another product simply because both advertise wireless features.
Look beyond the initial price
List any replacement batteries, filters, consumables or paid services the product requires. Check how often the manufacturer says they need replacing and whether the parts are readily available. Include delivery, tax, accessories and required service charges when comparing the first order.
Set a budget before browsing and compare the complete setup. A higher-priced bundle is only useful when you need the included pieces. An optional accessory is still an additional purchase, even if it helps reach a promotional threshold.
Read the return, warranty and support details
Check the return window, any restocking or return-shipping charges, and whether opening, assembling or using the item changes its return eligibility. Read what the warranty covers, who provides it and how a claim is submitted. Keep the receipt, model number and seller's contact information.
For an app-connected device, review its privacy and account controls as part of the buying decision. Follow the product's setup and safety instructions. This guide does not assess medical suitability or promise a health, comfort or performance result.
Compare one purchase at a time
Save the product details and delivered total before deciding. If the specifications, return terms or required extras are unclear, ask the seller first. We have not bought or tested the products reached through the optional retailer link below.
An optional retailer link
