Before buying a model car

A model can look right in a photo and still be the wrong size for your shelf. Start with the vehicle you want, the space you have and a firm budget. This checklist is free to use without registering or buying anything.
Write down the exact version you want
Make a short list of the make, model, year, color and any specific racing livery or movie version you are looking for. Check the product title and description against that list. Two models of the same car can have different wheels, trim, markings or included accessories. A photo alone may not settle those details.
If this is a gift, ask what scale the person collects and whether they already own that version. A smaller model that fits an existing collection can be a better choice than a larger one that has nowhere to go.
Check scale and actual dimensions
Scale describes the model's size relative to the real vehicle. At 1:24 scale, one unit on the model represents 24 of the same units on the vehicle. A 1:18 model of the same vehicle is larger than a 1:24 model. Compare the listed length, width and height rather than relying on the scale number alone.
Measure the shelf or case, including clearance around the model. Find out whether a base or display case is included and whether it changes the space needed. If dimensions are missing, ask the seller before ordering.
Read what is included and how it is intended to be used
Check materials, assembly requirements and the manufacturer's description of opening doors, steering or other moving parts. Do not assume that features shown on another version are included. Read the age rating, warnings and handling instructions. A display collectible may have small or fragile pieces and may not be intended as a play toy.
Look for a clear description of the item's condition and packaging. If keeping the box matters to you, ask how the seller describes box condition and what its damage policy covers. Keep the listing and order confirmation so you can compare what arrives with what you ordered.
Compare the complete order
| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Exact item | Version, scale, color, markings, materials and included accessories |
| Space | Model dimensions, base or case dimensions and shelf clearance |
| Delivered cost | Item price, shipping, tax and any optional display supplies |
| Timing | In-stock or preorder status, dispatch estimate and delivery to your address |
| Returns | Return window, condition requirements, damage reporting and return shipping |
Set a limit for the whole order before adding extras. If the item is a preorder, read the payment, cancellation and delivery terms before committing. Buy a model because you want to own or give it; this guide makes no prediction about scarcity, resale prices or future value.
