What to check before you plan a road trip

A route is only part of the plan. Decide how much time you want to spend driving, where you can stop, and what the complete trip may cost. You can use this checklist without registering, buying a subscription, or opening the optional partner link.
Start with the time you actually have
Write down your departure day, the day you need to arrive, and any stops with fixed opening hours or check-in times. Leave room for meals, breaks, traffic, and changes along the way. A map's driving estimate does not include every stop your group will need.
Choose a few priorities before adding detours. An extra stop might be worthwhile, but compare the added driving time with the time you want to spend there. Confirm access, opening hours, parking, and any reservation requirement with the location itself.
Add up more than fuel
Make a simple trip budget for fuel, tolls, parking, lodging, food, admission fees, and a buffer for changes. Use your vehicle's fuel use and current prices when making an estimate. Recheck the route if an overnight stay or a long detour changes the total.
For lodging, compare the final price, taxes, parking, cancellation deadline, and check-in rules. Keep a note of what can be canceled and when. An estimated budget is a planning aid, not a guaranteed cost.
Check the route and each important stop
Confirm road conditions and closures with the relevant transportation agency before departure and as the trip approaches. Check whether your vehicle or route has restrictions that affect your journey. Follow posted directions and local guidance when conditions change.
Keep addresses, reservation details, and contact numbers somewhere you can reach without a reliable mobile connection. Check what your chosen map or planning tool actually supports offline before relying on it. Share a practical itinerary with someone you trust without publishing private travel details.
Choose a planning method that fits the trip
A basic map, a written list of stops, and a spreadsheet may be enough. If you compare paid planning tools, check the current features, route and stop limits, device compatibility, subscription term, renewal price, cancellation process, and refund policy. Check whether a trial becomes a paid subscription.
